In a disturbing turn of events, a construction crane in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen district has collapsed, wreaking havoc as it smashed into multiple buildings.

The terrifying incident, which was captured on video, resulted in five individuals being injured, including a firefighter, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and NBC News.

Pedestrians were seen frantically fleeing the scene as the top portion of the crane was filmed collapsing, first impacting a building across the street, and then swinging back to hit a building under construction.

Three of the injured individuals were transported to a hospital with minor injuries, as reported by the FDNY and Mayor Eric Adams.

The accident, which occurred around 10 a.m., saw the crane’s boom and concrete load plunge to the ground after it caught fire, Mayor Adams noted, vowing a “full investigation” into the calamitous event.

FDNY Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer initially reported that the fire ignited inside the crane’s engine, approximately 45 stories high.

Firefighters on route to the scene heard the crane’s collapse, the falling load reported to be a staggering 16 tons.

City officials issued an emergency alert, advising New Yorkers of possible smoke, traffic delays, and the presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area.

Another alert followed 30 minutes later, classifying the fire as a “five alarm fire” and cautioning citizens about smoke exposure.

According to James Oddo, the Commissioner of Buildings, the investigation will consider all parties involved in the crane’s operation.

Engineers are set to evaluate the structural integrity of the building opposite the crane that was struck.

Expressing relief that the disaster wasn’t worse, Mayor Adams stated, “This could have been much worse. We are extremely fortunate that we weren’t during a busy time of the day.”

The mayor also lauded the efforts of over 200 firefighters who responded to the scene, ensuring the surrounding buildings were evacuated.
