White House admits coronavirus may be affecting more African Americans than other groups

  • The Trump administration gave an assurance that it will release that data about the confirmed cases and deaths involving American Africans in the coming days.
  • Medical experts earlier observed that individuals who had underlying health issues have higher risks of suffering from complications due to coronavirus.

During a daily presser for coronavirus on Tuesday, President Trump admitted that the number of African Americans getting infected and dying of coronavirus is proportionately alarming. The president assured the public that his administration would disclose the details surrounding the issue in the next few days.

Trump also said during the press briefing that the government is exerting all efforts to deal with the crisis.

While the president also noted the White House would arrange for support with African Americans, he did further elaborated on the details.

White House coronavirus task force member, Dr. Anthony Fauci, believes that African Americans may also be susceptible to COVID-19, possibly because of underlying health conditions, which include obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and asthma.

Experts had earlier ruled out that individuals who had pre-existing illnesses have a higher risk of suffering from severe illness or death because of COVID-19.

Fauci also said although this was the grim truth about the health crisis, nothing much can be done but to try providing the citizens with the best professional treatment possible so complications may be avoided.

It was reported that advocates have been urging both the White House and government health departments to make the public aware of coronavirus cases and deaths categorized per racial group.   

Trump vowed that they would release the numbers in the coming days.

Meanwhile, many states have divulged some data related to COVID-19 cases that impacted their locality. Still, the information is not conclusive as to how extensive the virus affected communities of specific ethnicities.

This week though, the Louisiana Department of Health has shown data that indicate that around seventy percent of COVID-19 deaths on its state is comprised of black people, noting that this ratio makes up 32 percent of the populace.

Likewise, in Illinois and Michigan, more than 30 percent of confirmed coronavirus cases are  African Americans and covered four of every one hundred people who died from the infection. However, these numbers are 14 and 15 percent, respectively, of the total population of each of the states.
