Akron under state of emergency after protests erupt over Jayland Walker’s death

- Protesters massed outside Mayor Dan Horrigan’s home chanting “defund the police.”
- Walker died after police opened fire at him more than 80 times while in pursuit.
A state of emergency was called in Akron, Ohio, on Monday after protests erupted following the death of Jayland Walker, a Black man who died after police shot him dozens of times.
“Early yesterday, we had several peaceful protests in the downtown footprint related to the officer-involved shooting of Jayland Walker. These protests did not escalate to violence and destruction,” Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan (D) said in a statement.
“However, as night fell and others began to join, the protests became no longer peaceful. There was significant property damage done to downtown Akron. Small businesses up and down Main St. have had their windows broken. We cannot and will not tolerate the destruction of property or violence,” he said.
Horrigan added that a curfew will also be implemented. It will take effect in the downtown area between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Fireworks set to commemorate the Fourth of July had also been canceled.
“As I stated yesterday, I fully support our residents’ right to peacefully assemble. What we have been calling for since the beginning, and what the Walker family and many community leaders and faith leaders have also urged, is peace,” Horrigan said.
Walker’s fatal shooting by Akron police last week sparked protests. On Sunday, police released a body-camera video showing officers firing a barrage of bullets at Walker. The 25-year-old was running away from cops following a traffic stop for an unspecified violation.
Officers involved in the shooting saw Walker as a threat, according to Akron Police Chief Steve Walker appeared to fire a shot while they were chasing his vehicle in an attempt to pull him over. Police later recovered a gold ring, handgun, and loaded magazine inside his car.
Bobby Dicello, a lawyer for Walker’s family, argued that when the police recovered the firearm, there were no bullets in it, The New York Times reported.
In a Tuesday statement, police said that after Walker escaped from his still-moving vehicle, he ran into a parking lot and that “actions by the suspect caused the officers to perceive he posed a deadly threat to them.”
According to DiCello, Walker did not appear to gesture toward the officers in a threatening way in the body-cam footage. He added that Walker seemed like he was running with nothing in his hands when he was fatally shot. DiCello said Walker suffered 60 to 80 gunshot wounds.

Trump did nothing wrong after the election results. He tried increase police presence, they turned him down. He did not grab a wheel or cuss at his secret service agents. That was complete fabrication and someone is getting charged for perjury. And sued for libel. And the only people killed were protestors. One shot and one beat to death. The Capital police officer who died was from health issues. You can hate on the protestors who broke in, they shouldn’t have done that, but you don’t need to make up lies to inflame it more.

Why don’t you tell us exactly what Trump did that was any different than the democrats and Clinton did the whole time Trump was president. In fact, they are still doing it to Trump a year and a half after he left office. You have Schiff that has been out right lying to the rest of congress even when he is in court. If the parents or parent had taught their son the correct way to behave and not commit crimes he would be alive today. Why did this criminal Walker have a gun in his vehicle? Oh! that’s right he was on his way to night class at college or was he going to church?
It is really getting old hearing the nut cases calling for more training for police it the criminal who needs to be trained to not violate the law and obey the civil and criminal laws where they live.
