WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • In an epiphany released by journalist Carl Berstein, 21 GOP senators have “expressed extreme contempt” for President Donald Trump.
  • The revelation came from various sources related to the president and the White House.
  • Bernstein said that many GOP senators from the list “were happy” to witness Trump’s reelection defeat.

In a revelation shared by veteran Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein, about 21 Republican senators have continuously “expressed extreme contempt” for Donald Trump and “his fitness” for the presidency.

Bernstein declared on Twitter that he was “not violating any pledge of journalistic confidentially [sic],” since the president repeatedly attempted to distort the election results as he already lost to Joe Biden.

The veteran reporter said that his information was gathered from “colleagues, staff members, lobbyists [and] White House aides.”

The names of the Republican senators were as follows: Rob Portman (Ohio), Lamar Alexander (Tennessee), Ben Sasse (Nebraska), Roy Blunt (Missouri), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), John Cornyn (Texas), John Thune (South Dakota), Mitt Romney (Utah), Mike Braun and Todd Young (Indiana), Tim Scott (South Carolina), Rick Scott and Marco Rubio (Florida), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Richard Burr (North Carolina), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania), Martha McSally (Arizona), Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts (Kansas) and Richard Shelby (Alabama).

The list included top GOP leaders like Thune, the senate’s majority whip; Rubio, senate chair of the intelligence committee; and Grassley, who is a former chair of the judiciary committee, among many others.

Trump’s known critics were also part of the list ━ Sasse, Cornyn, Collins, and Murkowski.

Meanwhile, GOP senators who were included in the list and have acknowledged Biden as President-elect were Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Rubio, and Toomey.

In an exclusive interview with CNN on Friday, Bernstein said: “Many, if not most, of these individuals, from what I have been told, were happy to see Donald Trump defeated in this election as long as the Senate could be controlled by the Republicans.”

In response to Bernstein’s publication, Sen. Scott’s spokesman told Forbes that the list was “dumb and doesn’t warrant a real response. Needless to say, Carl Bernstein has no idea what he’s talking about.”

With little exceptions, Bernstein also noted that those listed senators’ “craven public silence has helped enable Trump’s most grievous conduct – including undermining and discrediting the US the electoral system.”

Together with journalist Bob Woodward, Bernstein, 76, took on the Washington Post’s coverage of the Watergate scandal. The exposé led to former President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974.
