WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Joe Biden has called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) to resign following his sexual harassment accusations.
  • Biden made the remark after New York Attorney General Letitia James issued the results of the investigation.
  • Other top Democrat officials in New York also asked Cuomo to resign.

Following a probe claiming that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) had sexually assaulted over 10 different women, President Joe Biden has called on him to step down.

“I think he should resign. I understand that the state Legislature may decide to impeach, I don’t know that for a fact. I haven’t read all that data,” Biden said on Tuesday when asked regarding Cuomo’s sexual harassment allegations.

When asked if the governor should be impeached, the president responded: “Let’s take one thing at a time here.” He also noted that he was not able to read the report or talk personally to Cuomo.

In a press conference on Tuesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James released an investigative report, saying that the governor had “sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws. The independent investigation found that Gov. Cuomo harassed multiple women, many of whom were young women, by engaging in unwanted groping, kisses, hugging, and by making inappropriate comments.”

In response to the report, Cuomo released a video statement, claiming that he did not commit any sexual misbehavior. He argued that he was wrongly portrayed over his actions with the 11 women who accused him because of cultural and generational differences.

He also portrayed himself as an advocate of sexually-assaulted people and specifically apologized to one of his accusers and former aide, Charlotte Bennett. He added that he would issue new state policies on sexual harassment.

The governor also issued a report obtaining several photos of him touching and kissing people, as well as pictures of Biden and former President Barack Obama hugging a disaster victim to justify that his actions were not malicious.

When asked about Cuomo’s released photos, the president said: “I’m sure [there were] some embraces that were totally innocent, but apparently the attorney general decided there were things that weren’t.”

In a previous interview last March, Biden told ABC News that Cuomo should resign if the probe would validate the sexual misconduct claims.

“I think he will probably end up being prosecuted too,” he said.

During her daily press briefing, White House press secretary Jen Psaki described the findings as “abhorrent.”

“The White House’s message, the president’s message, the vice president’s message, my message, is all women who have lived through this type of experience, whether it is harassment or abuse or, in the worst case, assault, deserve to have their voices heard, deserve to be treated with respect and with dignity,” she said.

Other top New York Democrat officials including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Hakeem Jeffries and Jerry Nadler have also called on Cuomo to resign.
