WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Damar Hamlin woke up on Thursday after making “substantial progress” in recovery.
  • His first question was about the result of the Buffalo Bills’ unfinished game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
  • Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during Monday night’s game, which has since been canceled by the NFL.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has since made “substantial progress” in recovery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. On Thursday, the NFL star asked the medical staff “who won” the match against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Monday night’s game was postponed after Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field.

Dr. William A. Knight said that Hamlin was “very sick” for the “last three days” but “has made a fairly remarkable recovery and improvement.” The doctor added that Hamlin has showed “good neurological recovery as well as overall clinical improvement.”

During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, hospital officials shared that Hamlin is still on a breathing tube and is not able to speak, but can communicate by writing.

Dr. Timothy Pritts said that they allowed him to “gradually wake up as the rest of his body was healing.” Hamlin started to wake up on Thursday morning. He was still “critically ill” but showed signs that his “neurological condition and function is intact.”

“Last night he was able to emerge and follow commands and even asked who had won the game,” the doctor continued. “When he asked did we win, the answer is yes, Damar, you won the game of life.”

Pritts added that they observed “substantial improvement” in Hamlin’s condition within the past 24 hours. “We had significant concern about him after the injury and after the event that happened on the field,” he added. “But he is making substantial progress.”

The game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals was initially postponed but has since been canceled by the NFL, according to an announcement on Thursday evening.
