  • The US Health and Human Services (HHS) have been searching for locations to house illegal immigrant minors as the US Border Patrol is running out of space.
  • The HHS and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were tasked to manage the necessary operations at the convention center.

As more and more migrant kids cross the U.S.-Mexico border, the federal government had to turn to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas to help house about 3,000 illegal immigrant teenagers.

According to a memo acquired by the Associated Press, the center will serve as a “decompression center” for boys aged 15 to 17 as early as this week.

The US Border Patrol has been holding the unaccompanied minors, but they are only supposed to detain children for a maximum of three days.

The US Health and Human Services (HHS) have since been scrambling to find an appropriate location to house the children.

On Saturday, the US Department of Homeland Security had to enlist the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide support in managing and caring for the growing number of illegal immigrant kids.

On Monday, Dallas City Council members received a memo stating that “shelter management and contracts” for food, medical care, cleaning, and security at the convention center will be managed by FEMA and HHS.

Dallas City Manager T.C. Broadnax declared their support, stating, “Collective action is necessary and we will do our best to support this humanitarian effort.”

On Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed that the Biden administration has been searching for other facilities to house the unaccompanied minors. There were no specific details given about the Dallas site, however.

Psaki stated, “Certainly we would ensure that we’re meeting the standard that we have set out.”
