Mark Halperin, a well-known political analyst, has taken aim at CNN’s chief media analyst Brian Stelter, accusing him of “journalistic corruption.” This accusation comes in response to Stelter’s promotion of a forthcoming book by CNN anchor Jake Tapper, which delves into the decline of former President Joe Biden.
In recent newsletters, Stelter defended Tapper against claims of a cover-up and praised the authors’ dedication to fact-checking. Halperin, however, expressed his discontent on his show, “Next Up with Mark Halperin,” stating that Stelter is failing in his duty to “hold the media accountable.”
“You’ve got at CNN this guy Brian Stelter, who’s their media reporter, who’s an ally of Jake Tapper, to protect Tapper’s image, to enhance Tapper’s image,” Halperin remarked.
He further criticized Stelter for focusing on promoting Tapper’s book rather than addressing what he perceives as significant media failures.
Halperin also pointed out Stelter’s history of dismissing concerns about Biden’s cognitive decline.
“In addition to promoting and protecting Jake Tapper, Brian Stelter has been, over the course of the entire Biden presidency, one of the biggest critics of those on the right and those few people like me in the independent media who have tried to hold Joe Biden accountable,” he said.
Halperin accused Stelter of labeling critics as propagandists and failing to hold media organizations accountable for what he views as a cover-up to aid Biden’s presidency.
Halperin criticized Stelter for citing favorable reviews from major news organizations, which he claims participated in this cover-up.
“It’s just — it’s nothing short of journalistic corruption. And it’s missing the moment,” Halperin stated.
The @OriginalSinBook Twitter account further fueled the controversy by reposting Stelter’s newsletter section on the book’s fact-checking process and sharing his post quoting a review.
The review described Tapper and Thompson’s book as “a damning, step-by-step account of how the people closest to a stubborn, aging president enabled his quixotic resolve to run for a second term.”
As of now, Stelter has not responded to requests for comment.
