WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Honda announced it’s recalling more than 1.4 million vehicles in the US over safety concerns.
  • The carmaker said they need to fix drive shafts that can break, window switches that can overheat and software that can malfunction.
  • The recall involves Accords from 2018 to 2020, Insights from 2019 and 2020, Honda Civic Hybrids from 2012 and CR-Vs from 2002 through 2006.

Japanese carmaker Honda is recalling more than 1.4 million vehicles in the United States for 3 separate problems — to fix drive shafts that can fail, power window switches that can lead to fires and a software flaw.

For the software recall, vehicles affected include 737,000 2018-2020 Accords and 2019-2020 Insights. Honda says the rear camera, turn signals, and windshield wipers can malfunction due to a programming flaw in a control computer.

Owners will be notified in late January regarding the details on when they can take their vehicles to a dealer for repairs.

Two drive shaft recalls include 430,000 2012 Honda Civic Hybrids, 2007-2014 Honda Fit, the 2013-2015 Acura ILX and the 2013 through 2015 Honda Accord. These vehicles are in 22 states where salt is used to clear roads during winter. The drive shafts can fail due to corrosion.

Dealers should inspect the left and right drive shafts and replace them if problems occur. Though parts are not available yet, owners will be notified initially in February and will be advised later when to go to a dealer.

For power window switch recall, an estimated 268,000 CR-Vs from 2002 through 2006 are affected. Water can get into an open driver’s window and cause an electrical malfunction that can lead to overheating, possibly touching off a fire.

It’s Honda’s second recall within 10 years for the same issue. In October 2012, the carmaker started a recall of affected vehicles, but the repairs were not successful. The company says it received reports of 16 fires but no injuries.

Honda says owners should take the vehicles in for repairs as soon as they receive a notification starting in late January. They can also visit Honda’s website https://owners.honda.com/service-maintenance/recalls or call (888) 234-2138 to see if their SUV is affected.
