WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The discoveries of classified documents at Biden’s former office and Delaware residence prompted the House GOP to launch a formal investigation.
  • Republicans have previously vowed to look into the Biden administration for its policies on immigration and COVID-19.
  • The House Oversight Committee chair has demanded information on the documents as well as visitor logs for Biden’s residence.

Republicans renewed their push to investigate President Joe Biden’s administration following the discoveries of classified documents at his former office and his Delaware residence.

The GOP has vowed to investigate the president once they have taken back the majority. According to a New York Times report, Republicans have since looked into matters that could potentially lead to Biden’s impeachment. Such matters include the president’s family and business connections, immigration policies, and the origins of COVID-19.

More recently, the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee wasted no time in launching a formal investigation into Biden’s handling of classified material.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan and Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland seeking to conduct an “oversight of the Justice Department’s actions” related to the matter.

Kentucky Rep. James Comer, head of the House Oversight Committee, also wrote a letter to White House chief of staff Ron Klain, demanding the release of visitor logs for Biden’s Wilmington residence and all pertinent documents.

Comer wrote, “It is troubling that classified documents have been improperly stored at the home of President Biden for at least six years, raising questions about who may have reviewed or had access to classified information.”

On Sunday, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said that the House will oversee the investigation.

Democrats and Republicans have debated the similarities and differences between Biden’s handling of classified documents and that of former President Donald Trump.

Comer said on Sunday that his committee will not prioritize investigating Trump’s handling of classified documents “because the Democrats have done that for the past six years.”

Even with a slim majority, House Republicans have the subpoena power to commence a series of investigations while sidestepping other cases.
