WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • At least two people were fatally shot after a gunman opened fire in a Safeway grocery store in Oregon on Sunday.
  • The suspected attacker opened fire in the parking lot using an AR-15-style rifle.
  • The gunman was also found dead by police but it’s unclear if he was killed by another person or by a self-inflicted gunshot.

A man opened fire at an Oregon shopping center on Sunday night, killing two people.

Police said the gunman fired an AR-15-style rifle outside a Safeway grocery store at The Forum shopping center in Bend at around 7 pm. He was also found dead by responding officers.

Bend Police Department spokeswoman Sheila Miller said in a press briefing that police received multiple 911 calls of an active shooter near the grocery store beginning at 7.04 pm.

The shooter first fired shots using an AR-15-style rifle into a Big Lots store at the shopping center before entering the Safeway at the west entrance, Miller said.

The first victim was fatally shot in the entryway of the grocery store while the second person was shot and killed in the back of the store.

No one was reported to have been injured inside the Big Lots store.

Cops arrived within minutes of the first 911 calls and found the suspected attacker dead at the scene.

Preliminary information revealed that local police who were first on the scene did not fire any shots. The gunman may have been armed with additional weapons aside from the rifle, Miller added.

Witnesses said they heard several shots. Dozens of police officers from local, state and federal agencies responded to the incident.

One of the shoppers, Molly Taroli, 40, described what happened inside the store. She said the shooting had already stopped when police arrived on the scene.

Taroli told The Bulletin that the gunman combed through every aisle “spraying” bullets as employees shouted “go, go, go!” to shoppers. They were directed through a stockroom and out the back door.

Taroli added that she pulled out her own handgun while her husband ran out the front door to get his gun.

It’s not yet determined if the gunan was killed by another person or by a self-inflicted gunshot.

The investigation is still ongoing on the shooting and authorities have not released information about the suspected gunman or the victims.
