US Navy deploys four warships as Pelosi heads to Taiwan

- The U.S. deployed four warships, including an aircraft carrier, in waters east of Taiwan.
- Taiwanese media reported several Chinese warplanes flying close to the island and warships sailing near the Taiwan strait.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will go ahead with visiting Taiwan as part of her Asia tour despite threats from China, CNN and Taiwanese media.
The U.S. deployed four warships, including an aircraft carrier, in waters east of Taiwan, describing it as “routine” deployments.
A U.S. Navy official confirmed to Reuters that the nuclear-powered supercarrier ‘USS Ronald Reagan’ had transited the South China Sea and was currently in the Philippines Sea, east of Taiwan.
USS Reagan operates with a guided missile cruiser, USS Antietam, and a destroyer, USS Higgins.
In May, the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was deployed to the region and is still in the area, the U.S. Navy official said.
The House Speaker is expected to arrive in Taipei Tuesday night. The U.S. said it would not be intimidated by Chinese “saber-rattling” over Pelosi’s visit.
Confirmation of the deployments comes as signs emerge of military activity on both sides of the Taiwan strait ahead of the visit, Reuters reported.
On Tuesday morning, Chinese planes have been reported flying close to the median line dividing the waterway while several Chinese warships had been sailing since Monday near the unofficial dividing line.
The source said both Chinese warships and aircraft “squeezed” the median line on Tuesday morning, an unusual move the person described as “very provocative.”
The person said the Chinese aircraft repeatedly conducted tactical moves of briefly “touching” the median line and circling back to the other side of the strait on Tuesday morning, while Taiwanese aircraft were on standby nearby.
Neither side’s aircraft normally cross the median line.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday they have a full grasp of military activities near Taiwan and will appropriately dispatch forces in reaction to “enemy threats” as tensions rise with China.
The ministry had “reinforced” its combat alertness level from Tuesday morning to Thursday noon, the island’s official Central News Agency reported on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources.
Chinese social media was abuzz with both tensions about potential conflict and patriotic fervor over the prospect of unification with Taiwan.
The People’s Liberation Army has conducted military exercises, including live fire drills, in the South China, Yellow Sea and Bohan Seas since last week.
Military analysts say that increased deployments at a time of tension increase the risk of accidents, even if no side wants an actual conflict.

If China takes control of the China Seas, no one can get to Japan, South Korea, or Guam, there is a lot at stake here, & the US is not going to let that happen. You can bet on it. Knowing one can’t finish and believing one can are subjective decisions.
