  • The White House’s national security adviser, Robert O’Brien, claimed that Chinese hackers have been targeting the US election infrastructure.
  • O’Brien added that the hackers have been trying to access government websites and “influence operations” on several platforms.
  • He then threatened “severe consequences” for “any country that attempts to interfere with our free and fair election.”

Robert O’Brien, the White House’s national security adviser, issued a warning on Sunday that the US election infrastructure has been targeted by Chinese hackers.

Appearing on CBS News’ “Face The Nation”, O’Brien claimed, “They’d like to see the President lose. China — like Russia, like Iran — they’ve engaged in cyberattacks and phishing and that sort of thing with respect to our election infrastructure, with respect to websites and that sort of thing.”

He surmised that it’s because President Trump has been “tougher on China than any president in history.”

O’Brien added that hackers have been trying to access government websites and “influence operations, whether it’s on TikTok or Twitter and other spaces.”

He then vowed that the administration will not “put up with it,” no matter which foreign country it comes from.

O’Brien declared: “Whether their leaders prefer Joe Biden or prefer Donald Trump, it doesn’t matter. We’re Americans.

“We’re not going to have foreign countries deciding who our next president is going to be. That’s outrageous.”

He then issued a warning: “There will be severe consequences with any country that attempts to interfere with our free and fair election.”

On Friday, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence reported that the Kremlin was trying to interfere by “denigrating” Joe Biden’s bid while giving a “boost” to Trump’s campaign.

When asked what the Trump administration is doing to combat this, O’Brien responded that they had “made it very clear” to Russia to stay out of the election.

“There’s almost nothing we can sanction left of the Russians … no administration has been tougher,” O’Brien pointed out.

“We’ve sanctioned the heck out of the Russians — individuals, companies, the government. We’ve kicked out literally scores of Russian spies. We’ve closed down all their consulates on the West Coast. We closed down diplomatic facilities. There’s not a lot left we can do with the Russians,” he continued.
