Viral NYC Photo Ignites Debate Over Socialist Agenda
Clear Facts
- A photo of Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Zohran Mamdani in Astoria went viral on Saturday.
- Sanders is set to headline a Brooklyn town hall supporting Mamdani on his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour.
- Their public appearances have sparked both support and criticism online.
Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Democrat mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani were pictured together in Astoria, Queens, sparking widespread online reactions.
The image was shared around 3:36 p.m. and attracted hundreds of thousands of views, drawing both praise from progressives and mockery from critics.
The caption read, “A perfect afternoon in Astoria.”
Sanders, now 84, and Mamdani, age 33, also marched in Manhattan’s recent Labor Day parade, holding a “Power in Unity” banner, with Governor Kathy Hochul also present.
Mamdani promotes himself as a democratic socialist, promising free buses and state-run grocery stores funded by higher taxes on wealthy citizens, and has set a grassroots donation limit at $8 million.
Sanders, who grew up in Brooklyn, is using his tour to boost progressive figures like Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, both favorites among left-leaning New York Democrats.
One online user commented, “Three millionaires talking about socialism.”
Another user wrote, “The last thing your money sees before it dies.”
Additional criticism included, “3 communists walk into a bar, they demanded the workers pay for everything.”
Mamdani is scheduled to appear with Sanders at Brooklyn College’s Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts at 6:00 pm for the rally.
Representatives for Mamdani did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
