Apple to recruit engineers to develop 6G technology

  • The company will be hiring software engineers who would be tasked to develop the wireless technology and chip design.

Apple Inc. is planning to develop the sixth-generation cellular connectivity, which is known as 6G — signaling that the company wants to be a trailblazer in this technology.

The California-based company started posting vacancies in the field of wireless engineering as it aims to recruit research engineers for present and future-generation network systems.

The new positions would be based at the company’s offices in Silicon Valley and San Diego, Apple’s lead bases in developing wireless technology and chip design.

“You will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to craft next-generation wireless technology that will have deep impact on future Apple products. In this role, you will be at the center of a cutting-edge research group responsible for creating next-generation disruptive radio access technologies over the next decade,” the job announcement stated.

Engineers who will be given the jobs will “research and design next-generation (6G) wireless communication systems for radio access networks” and “participate in industry/academic forums passionate about 6G technology.” 

Recently, Apple joined a group of companies working for 6G standards and other future cellular technologies. As the metrics and actual launching of 6G are still not known, experts have already hinted that such advancement could produce speed that is over 100 times faster than 5G.

The job listings were also an implication of Apple’s sustainable move to develop more in-house technology. Last year, the company built the iPhone and iPad’s main processors as well as its Mac. Apple has also leveled up its technological drive by upgrading its camera techs and making its own modified screens, alongside developing the AirPods’ wireless chips and Apple Watch, among others.

In 2020, Apple also kick-started building its first custom modem, a chip that would enable phones to have wireless network connections.

During a town hall meeting with employees last December, the company’s custom technology and chip head Johny Srouji said that “long-term strategic investments like these are a critical part of enabling our products and making sure we have a rich pipeline of innovative technologies for our future.”

As Apple has yet to enable 5G to its products such as iPad and Apple Watch while still offering older models of iPhones with older 4G technology, it still has a long way to go to maximize the use of 5G, apart from its futuristic goal in becoming a pioneer in 6G technology.

Industry spectators have anticipated that 6G would be launched around 2030. With this, Apple has indicated that it wants to be in front of unveiling this new technology by investing and developing as early as now.
