Joanna Cassidy provided insight into her current relationship with Alan Hamel during a recent podcast appearance. She disclosed she had not dated for a long time and found the experience of dating a widower to be interesting.

“Well, I am dating someone,” she said.

She explained she and Hamel started seeing each other after reconnecting a year ago, and that their relationship was progressing well.

When asked about who she was dating, Cassidy responded she preferred privacy before revealing, “his name is Alan Hamel, who was married to Suzanne Somers for many years.” Hamel and Somers were together for over five decades before Somers’ passing in October 2023 from breast cancer.

Despite previously working with Somers on a 1985 miniseries, Cassidy said dating Hamel is not awkward for her. Cassidy was married to Dr. Kennard C. Kobrin for a decade and has two children.

Alan Hamel recalled meeting Cassidy decades ago and recently reconnecting through his son. “We liked each other, not romantically, but mainly with respect,” Hamel noted in a June 2025 interview.

He added, “My son [from a previous marriage] met Joanna at a screening and, after a long conversation, suggested to Joanna that she and me would get along and should meet. Stephen did not know we knew each other.”

In August 2025, Hamel spoke about the comfort he found with Cassidy and said, “we’ve spent a lot of time being with each other, which is great.” He shared that it was strange dating after losing Somers but that she supported his decision to continue living fully.

“During Suzanne‘s last few days, she told me twice to ‘don’t mope around. Live your life. We will see one another after you cross over.’ I’m fortunate to have Joanna in my life. Most men would love to have a Joanna in their life.”

Cassidy also said, “the connection was quite natural,” and that their first date lasted several days.
