Winter Storm Threatens Over 1,000 Miles of the North

Clear Facts
- A winter storm is projected to bring snow, ice, and freezing rain across the Northern Tier from Tuesday night into Thursday.
- The system could cover more than 1,000 miles, affecting the Upper Midwest and New England, with Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and northern Michigan at risk for moderate snowfall.
- Heavy snowfall and possible blizzard conditions may develop in North Dakota and northern Minnesota due to strong winds and abundant moisture from both the Pacific and Gulf of America.
The Northern Tier is preparing for another round of severe winter weather as a storm system moves across more than 1,000 miles this week. Forecasters are tracking dangerous snow and icing conditions that could hit regions from the Upper Midwest through New England.
“There is growing confidence in both the timing and intensity of the system,” per the FOX Forecast Center.
This storm is expected to organize in the West and move quickly through the Rocky Mountains and Plains toward the Great Lakes. While Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and northern Michigan are likely to experience moderate snowfall, the exact impacts are still uncertain.
The storm is forecast to start late Tuesday and last into early Thursday, fueled by an influx of moisture from the Pacific and the Gulf of America. As the system intensifies, North Dakota and northern Minnesota are most at risk for heavy snowfall and strong winds, with the possibility of blizzard-like conditions.
Forecasts suggest snow totals could reach over 5 to 8 inches in some areas. The exact path of the storm remains a key uncertainty, as minor shifts could drastically change precipitation types. If the storm tracks farther north, warmer air could bring rain or mixed precipitation instead of heavy snow, but a southern route would hold colder air and increase snowfall totals.
The system should start to weaken by Wednesday, but areas may experience a brief period of freezing rain if cold air lingers at the surface. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous travel and changing weather conditions.
