Texas GOP Senate Race Spurs Democratic Hopes

Clear Facts
- Brit Hume stated Ken Paxton’s controversies could benefit Democrats in Texas.
- Paxton leads the GOP Senate primary ahead of incumbent John Cornyn.
- Paxton has faced indictment, impeachment, and a federal investigation but was acquitted and not prosecuted.
Brit Hume, chief political analyst at Fox News, warned that controversial Republican candidates might create opportunities for Democrats in Texas. He highlighted Attorney General Ken Paxton as the frontrunner in the Senate primary, noting Paxton’s political challenges.
“I think that he [Paxton] is a controversial figure. He’s been both indicted and impeached on separate issues,” Hume said.
Hume explained that Paxton’s background could provide useful material for Democratic opponents in a general election. He emphasized the significance of the race for both parties going forward.
“And while he’s survived both of those things, his background might be fertile territory for Democrats trying to beat him if he was a general election candidate, so that’s a race to really watch.”
Host Bret Baier pointed out Democrats’ long-standing aim to flip Texas blue, an ambition Hume acknowledged could depend on the GOP’s nominee.
“The Attorney General Paxton — and there you see Wesley Hunt as well in that race. Democrats do have this aspiration, and they have, for some time, to turn Texas blue,” Baier said.
Hume described Democratic contender Talarico as articulate and promising, mentioning the party’s ongoing hopes.
“Well, if Talarico wins, he’s a very articulate young man,” Hume said. “A talented young man. He is a fairly promising candidate, and Democrats have dreamed, as you say, Bret, that they can somehow turn the state of Texas blue. It could happen, I suppose.”
According to Hume, John Cornyn would likely present the strongest Republican challenge in a general election, although Cornyn currently lags behind Paxton in primary polls. He also noted that Paxton is strongly supported by the conservative base of the GOP, especially Trump supporters.
“The Republicans do have some issues here because John Cornyn, the incumbent, would, you know, it’s fair to argue, I think, that he would be the strongest general election candidate. But at the moment he is trailing in the polls and has been for some time. And the leading guy, leading the polls, Ken Paxton, is adored by a lot of Trump supporters and the MAGA wing of the Republican Party,” Hume said.
In 2023, Ken Paxton was accused by state legislators of misuse of office, which led to his impeachment. The Texas House filed 20 articles against him, but he was later acquitted in the Senate, and federal authorities declined to prosecute him.
Keep a close watch on this race to see which direction Texas will take as the Senate seat contest unfolds.
