WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Elon Musk called out outgoing NIAID Director, Dr. Anthony Fauci, by saying his pronouns are “Prosecute/Fauci.”
  • Fauci is preparing to step down from public health service and is facing investigations over the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Musk has been coordinating with journalists to release “Twitter Files,” inside information on his Twitter predecessors’ actions.

New Twitter owner Elon Musk stirred things up again when he declared his pronouns to be “Prosecute/Fauci.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci is preparing to step down from his position as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) after five decades of service in public health.

He is currently facing investigations from Republican leaderships over the connection between the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic and about a decade of gain-of-function research.

Speaking at a CNN interview set to air Sunday, the outgoing NIAID director talked about the “enmity” that formed between him and former President Donald Trump. Fauci noted that he could not be “complicit” with Trump’s misinformed statements about the coronavirus, such as using hydroxychloroquine and bleach. Most Republicans criticized Fauci for his remarks on mask and vaccine mandates.

Musk previously talked about gender identity when his 18-year-old transgender child legally transitioned to a woman earlier this year and cut ties with him. He called out the move to be pushed by “neo-Marxists” at educational institutions teaching “full-on communism and a general sentiment that if you’re rich, you’re evil.”

Musk made his recent statement about pronouns and Fauci after the fourth part of the “Twitter Files” was released on Saturday.

The first installment reported on how his predecessors at Twitter blocked the spread of information about Hunter Biden’s laptop prior to the 2020 election. The second installment showed how Twitter staff put certain Twitter accounts in specific blacklists to limit their visibility.

The third and fourth installments showed how Twitter executives justified former President Donald Trump’s ban from the platform. Before the ban, Twitter execs took action by censoring Trump’s tweets ahead of the Nov. 2020 election while engaging with representatives of law enforcement agencies. But the company continued to face mounting pressure, including from former First Lady Michelle Obama, to take drastic action.

On Saturday, the social media company said that users can buy subscriptions to Twitter Blue to get the blue checkmark and its special features beginning on Monday.

The blue checkmark used to be a mark of verification given to companies, government entities, journalists, and celebrities. After Musk’s takeover, he made the blue check a payment option.

The service had to be suspended mere days after its launch, however, after it became abused by imposter accounts that impersonated businesses such as Musk’s very own SpaceX and Tesla.

Web users will have to pay $8 a month for the relaunched service and iPhone users $11 a month. According to Twitter, perks will include fewer ads, longer video posts, and more prominently featured posts.
