“And for those who want to do more to help your neighbors and earn some extra cash, you too can become an Emergency Snow Shoveler,” Mamdani said in his announcement.

“Just show up to your local Sanitation Garage between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow with your paperwork.”

Despite criticism of identification requirements in other areas, the city is mandating multiple forms of ID for participants in the emergency snow program.

Recent storms left sidewalks and streets impassable, pushing the city to once again seek rapid volunteer involvement rather than long-term solutions.

The Department of Sanitation hires emergency shovelers temporarily, often with minimal notice as storms approach, drawing criticism for lacking consistent preparedness.

The blizzard warning is in effect from Sunday morning to Monday evening, with up to two feet of snow and dangerous wind gusts expected.

Meteorologists forecast heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous travel throughout the region, urging residents to prepare for disruptions and avoid unnecessary travel.

Mamdani framed this recruitment as an opportunity for neighborly help, but critics view it as a sign of City Hall’s ongoing struggle to meet basic winter weather demands through standard procedures.

Officials have not detailed any long-term staffing increases since the last storm, prompting concerns about repeated reliance on emergency volunteers.

Residents are advised to bring their paperwork and assist clearing snow as another test of New York City’s winter response begins.
