Romney to Santos: ‘You don’t belong here’

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Rep. George Santos grabbed a center aisle seat ahead of Biden’s SOTU address but not everyone, including some Republicans, was interested in shaking hands with him.
  • Sen. Mitt Romney told Santos he doesn’t belong in Congress during a tense exchange before the SOTU address started.
  • Santos responded by tweeting that Romney would “NEVER be PRESIDENT!”

Republican Rep. George Santos and Sen. Mitt Romney had a tense exchange ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union address Tuesday evening.

Santos grabbed a prized seat on the center aisle, putting him in a great position to shake many hands.

When Romney was walking down the center aisle on the way to his seat he recognized the embattled New York congressman and appeared to tell Santos, “You don’t belong here.”

C-SPAN cameras captured the exchange.

“You ought to be embarrassed,” Romney told Santos, prompting a brief exchange of words between the two Republicans.

The House Ethics Committee is doing an investigation of Santos for allegedly lying about key details of his background and work experience, and fabricating accolades throughout his campaign. Santos has temporarily resigned from his committee positions to face legal and ethical reviews.

In the exchange, Romney seems to call Santos an “a—” before turning away from the New York lawmaker, who seemed to retort: “You’re a bigger one.”

Santos’ coveted seat let him greet, shake hands and interact with officials as they enter and exit the chamber, including President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and the U.S. Supreme Court Justices.

Four freshman Republican lawmakers, all hailing from New York, are calling on Santos to resign from Congress. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he had no intention of pressuring Santos, saying “the voters elected him to serve.”

Aside from his string of lies, Santos was accused last month of taking GoFundMe money for a disabled veteran’s dying dog. More recently, he was accused of sexual harassment and violation of pay rules by an ex-staffer.

When asked about the exchange after the SOTU address, Romney said he did not recall it but called Santos a “sick puppy.”

“Given the fact that he’s under ethics investigation, he should be sitting in the back row and being quiet instead of parading in front of the president,” Romney told reporters.

Santos responded by tweeting: “Hey @MittRomney just a reminder that you will NEVER be PRESIDENT!”

I agree about Romney, but, Santos is an honest liar. We know he’s lying so act accordingly. With Romney who knows what or who he’s for and why. Romney will cause more chaos and damage than Santos.

Romney has been a RINO for decades. Santos, based on his fabricated biography and apparent ease at lying started his political career acting like a Democrat so he fits in right beside Romney.

Neither one of them belong there. In fact, most of the idiots in Washington shouldn’t be there.

Santos is a scumbag but Romney and Biden aren’t any better, so nothing gained reporting this event.

I really can’t get upset about Santos… how is he different than most politicians? And Biden made a career out of lying, cheating, fabricating stories about every aspect of his life and career… so how is Santos different? But his time is definitely limited there… and that’s fine by me also…

Of all people, that idiot Romney has the gall to tell that to anyone in Congress. Remember what the great Teddy Roosevelt said about the Senate: “When the role is called in the Senate, senators don’t know whether to answer “present” or “not guilty”! Why doesn’t he confront fake war hero Connecticut Senator Blumenthal ?

It’s a miracle that decent people like Romney are willing to be involved in politics when you see the nasty lies they have to put up with as part of the bargain.
