Clear Facts

  • The Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua is expanding across the U.S., posing a long-term threat similar to that of MS-13.
  • The gang has been linked to numerous crimes in various states, including Georgia, Illinois, Texas, Colorado, and New York.
  • Former President Trump has announced “Operation Aurora” to target and dismantle illegal migrant criminal networks like Tren de Aragua.

A recent report has raised alarms about the expansion of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) within the United States. The report describes the gang’s growth as “like a slow growing cancer” that will affect Americans “for decades.”

The gang, which originated in the Tocoron prison in Venezuela, has spread its influence across multiple countries, including the United States. The report highlights that the surge of TdA coincided with the crisis at the southern border, allowing hundreds of its members to blend in with the influx of Venezuelan migrants.

“During the past few years, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have been released or paroled into the United States,” the report states, noting that among them are members of TdA. The gang has been likened to the notorious MS-13, which has been a persistent criminal threat since the 1980s.

Mark Morgan, former acting Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, has issued a stark warning about the gang’s rise, attributing it to the current administration’s policies.

“Although MS-13 remains at the top of the list of the 50-plus different gangs from across the globe attempting to illegally enter our borders, the Biden–Harris Administration has intentionally provided the pathway for what could become MS-13 2.0,” Morgan stated.

The report also draws attention to the numerous crimes linked to TdA across several states, including more than 62 robberies in New York City. In Colorado, the gang has reportedly taken control of several apartment blocks, and members have been given a “green light” to attack law enforcement.

In response to the growing threat, former President Trump has pledged to address the issue if re-elected, unveiling “Operation Aurora” aimed at dismantling these criminal networks.

“I’m announcing today that upon taking office, we will have an operation Aurora at the federal level to expedite the removals of these savage gangs,” Trump declared, emphasizing the use of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

The report also warns that the crimes linked to TdA might only represent the “tip of the iceberg,” suggesting that many incidents may go unreported. Senator J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, has countered claims that the gang’s activities are limited, indicating a potentially broader network.

“It is plausible that they have connections to Tren de Aragua or other violent gangs that are not always evident to U.S. law enforcement even after arrest,” the report concludes, urging vigilance against this emerging threat.
