Clear Facts

  • Mariah Thomas, a 26-year-old Missouri mother, has been charged with endangering the life of her child after her one-month-old daughter was found dead with burn wounds.
  • Thomas claimed she thought the oven was a crib and accidentally placed her child in it.
  • Authorities were called to her Kansas City home after receiving reports that the child was not breathing.

A mother in Missouri has been accused of baking her newborn daughter to death in an oven, according to the Daily Mail. The mother claimed she thought the oven was a crib.

Mariah Thomas, 26, was eventually charged with endangering the life of a child after one-month-old Za’Riah Mae was discovered dead with “burn wounds.” The authorities were called to the woman’s Kansas City home after reports that the child was not breathing.

When the police arrived at the home, they discovered that the infant had been covered in burns. And her “blackened” clothing had been melted onto her diaper, per the report.

The New York Post reported that Thomas told the authorities she was “putting her child down for a nap, and accidentally placed the child in the oven instead of a crib.” One of Thomas’ friends suggested that mental illness could have played a role in the horrific incident.

“Mariah had mental issues from what I know and didn’t have the mindset of a [sic] adult, she thought like a child,” the friend said.

The infant’s grandfather told the authorities that he received a call from Thomas around 1:00 p.m. on Friday. She told him that “something was wrong with the baby and he needed to return home immediately.”

Upon returning home, the grandfather immediately smelled smoke and found the infant dead in her crib. Thomas said that she had “accidentally” put the infant in the oven, according to court filings.

When Thomas was taken into custody, she apparently invoked her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent.

Reports suggested that her social media accounts appear to show she was a loving mother who cared for her child. She referred to the infant as her “princess.”

The Daily Mail reported that in one Facebook post, she expressed how she wanted to be the “best mother I can be to my beautiful daughter.”

However, not all of her social media posts painted a positive image.

Leading up to the horrific incident, she claimed on social media that no one was looking out for her or her daughter, writing: “Mfs claim they my friend by don’t never check up on me or Za’Riah.”

The ominous message was written on January 20.

Thomas is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center.

Clear Thoughts (op-ed)

The horrendous case of Mariah Thomas, the Missouri mother who allegedly baked her newborn baby to death in an oven, is a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support. While it is essential to hold individuals accountable for their actions, we must also recognize the potential role mental illness may have played in this tragedy.

A friend of Thomas suggested that mental illness could have contributed to the incident, claiming she “thought like a child.” This raises questions about the support system surrounding Thomas and her baby, and whether adequate mental health resources were available to them.

In a society where mental health issues are often stigmatized and underfunded, it is crucial to ensure those in need have access to proper care and support. As we grieve for the innocent life lost in this horrifying case, we must also consider the broader implications and work towards a future where tragedies like this can be prevented.

If she was that mentally impaired, she should have never been allowed to be alone with the child. I think she is lying, she had to have timurned the oven on, no one, even mentally impaired would mistake an oven for a crib! She should be in prison for murder!

This is a case where the best sentence is making sure she can never have any more children, jail time or not. If she is mentally ill, at least she won’t mother another baby to put in harms way. If she is not mentally illl, then this was first degree murder.

Anyone who believes her story is the reason why people like her get away with doing things like this. An honest jury will convict her of murder and sentence her to death. Like in prison is too good for her and too costly to the taxpayers.

If she had used a gun to kill the baby there would be no mention of the mental illness, just the fact that a gun was used! Lets not have a double standard applied here and punish her as the killer that she is
