Democrats Oppose Move They Backed Before

Clear Facts
- Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Adam Schiff criticized President Trump’s suggestion to ‘nationalize’ voting, despite previously supporting federal control over elections.
- President Trump suggested Republicans should oversee voting in states with suspected election issues, which sparked backlash from both lawmakers.
- In 2021, both Jeffries and Schiff supported H.R. 1, a Democrat-led bill that would have increased federal oversight of elections.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator Adam Schiff spoke out against President Trump’s recent remarks suggesting the nationalization of voting control. Both officials supported a similar policy when Democrats introduced H.R. 1, the “For the People Act,” in 2021.
President Trump commented that Republicans should control voting in select states, citing concerns about illegal immigration and election integrity. This statement led to criticism from Jeffries and Schiff, who argued that running elections should remain a state-level responsibility.
“We know that states are the ones that are empowered to conduct elections, and every state should be allowed to decide the best way to proceed to ensure that there’s a free and fair election.”
Jeffries accused Republicans of trying to suppress votes, claiming they are working to undermine fair elections.
“What Donald Trump wants to do is try to nationalize the election. Translation: steal it. And we’re not going to let it happen.”
Senator Schiff also weighed in, asserting that Trump intends to interfere with election results if the outcome is not in his favor.
“He’s prepared to try to take some kind of action to overturn the result, and we really shouldn’t question that.”
Both legislators championed federal control over elections through H.R. 1 in 2021, promoting increased oversight by Washington. Critics of H.R. 1 argued it would strip states of their authority and create opportunities for manipulation.
Hans Von Spakovsky of The Heritage Foundation described the bill as a federal takeover of election administration that would “make it easier to cheat and easier to manipulate election results.”
