  • Dr. Anthony Fauci described calls for his beheading as “just noise” that he tries to push aside to stay focused on his goal.
  • Fauci’s strict, evidence-based approach to the pandemic has resulted in several violent threats against him.
  • He acknowledged that becoming the target of these threats, especially from public figures, has been stressful but also “kind of unusual.”

Responding to former White House strategist Steve Bannon’s calls for his beheading, Dr. Anthony Fauci described the threat as “just noise” but “kind of unusual.”

During an interview on Australian television, Fauci touched upon the stresses of his job as the nation’s top infectious disease expert amid the pandemic.

As part of President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force, Fauci followed a strict, evidence-based approach in fighting the spread of the viral disease. But as the president and his allies continued to refute his suggestions, Fauci found himself becoming the target of violent threats. He even needed extra government security as a result.

Fauci acknowledged that the situation has “been very stressful.” He added, “When you have public figures like Bannon calling for your beheading, that’s really kind of unusual, I think. That’s not the kind of thing you think about when you’re going through medical school to become a physician.”

Bannon, a former Trump aide, declared last week on his podcast “War Room: Pandemic”: “I’d put the heads on pikes. I’d put them at the two corners of the White House as a warning to federal bureaucrats,” referring to Fauci and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

His podcast has since been removed from several social media platforms for violating policies on inciting violence. His Twitter account was also permanently suspended.

Fauci remarked, “You know, people calling for you to be beheaded, fired, thrown into the fire pit, or whatever, that’s just noise. You don’t pay attention to that.”

He said that he simply pushes the noise and “nut junk” aside so he can focus on his goal to help develop COVID-19 vaccines.

He shared, “I think we’ve been quite successful in that. Now, the next challenge is to develop good therapeutics and the other challenge is to get public health measures to be listened to by the American public.”
