Graham Warns Iran Blockade May Soon Go Global After Trump Call

Clear Facts
- Sen. Lindsey Graham spoke with President Trump and War Secretary Hegseth Wednesday morning about the Iran blockade
- The U.S. military blockade against Iranian ports has been in effect for over a week, with American forces operating across the Middle East and beyond
- President Trump extended the ceasefire Tuesday while keeping the blockade in place, stating Iran’s government is “seriously fractured”
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina signaled Wednesday that the United States blockade against Iran could expand into a global operation as the Trump administration maintains pressure on the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. The long-serving lawmaker disclosed that he had spoken directly with President Donald Trump and War Secretary Pete Hegseth about the strategic path forward.
“I had a very good call this morning with @POTUS and @SecWar Pete Hegseth about the way forward regarding the Iran conflict. I think the President’s decision to leave the blockade in place is very smart. It is having a strong effect on the ability of Iran to continue to be the largest state sponsor of terrorism – which they appear intent on doing,”
Graham said in a post on X.
The South Carolina senator made clear his expectations for the blockade’s continuation and potential expansion.
“I not only expect this blockade to stay in place until Iran shows a commitment to change their ways, I expect the blockade will be growing and that it could become global soon.”
Graham delivered a stark warning to nations and entities considering assistance to the Iranian regime. His message emphasized the consequences of supporting Tehran’s oil distribution network, which funds terrorist operations worldwide.
“To those assisting or thinking about assisting the Iranian regime in distributing its oil, which provides resources for terrorism, you do so at your own peril. Well done to President Trump and his team. This is the best chance since 1979 to change the behavior of the regime and I hope this can be accomplished through diplomacy.”
The United States military has maintained its blockade against Iranian ports for more than a week. U.S. Central Command emphasized the scope of American military operations in a Wednesday statement.
“The U.S. military has global reach. American forces are operating and enforcing the blockade across the Middle East and beyond.”
President Trump announced a ceasefire extension Tuesday afternoon while making explicit that the blockade would remain in effect. The decision came after requests from Pakistani leaders, as Iran’s government shows signs of internal division.
“Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal,”
Trump stated on Truth Social.
The president directed the military to continue the blockade while remaining prepared for all contingencies.
“I have therefore directed our Military to continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”
The blockade represents a significant escalation in pressure against the Iranian regime, which has used oil revenues to fund terrorist organizations throughout the Middle East and beyond. Graham’s comments suggest the Trump administration may be preparing to coordinate with international partners to further isolate Iran economically.
The strategy marks a departure from previous approaches to Iran, focusing on economic strangulation rather than immediate military action. With Iran’s government reportedly fractured and facing internal pressures, the administration appears to be leveraging this moment of weakness to force behavioral change from a regime that has sponsored terrorism for over four decades.
