Republicans Split Over Israel as Younger Voters Turn Skeptical

Clear Facts
A new Pew Research poll reveals that 60% of all U.S. adults now hold an unfavorable view of Israel, representing a significant shift from previous years. While older Republicans maintain strong support for the Middle Eastern ally, a majority of GOP voters under age 50 now view the nation negatively.
Democratic sentiment remains overwhelmingly critical across all age groups, with 80% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents expressing unfavorable opinions. Only 27% of Americans overall express confidence in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to handle world affairs effectively.
- 60% of American adults now have an unfavorable view of Israel.
- 57% of Republicans aged 18 to 49 view Israel unfavorably, compared to just 24% of Republicans over 50.
- 84% of Democrats under age 50 and 76% of those 50 and older hold negative views of Israel.
Republican strategist Mike McKenna suggested the survey results are not surprising given the decades of Middle Eastern conflict. He noted that younger generations have watched the U.S. at war for most of their lives without seeing tangible benefits.
“We are now 80 years and three generations away from the plucky new nation-state of Israel and the constant threats to its very existence,” McKenna told the DCNF.
“They are now a nuclear power and the most formidable regional military power in their neighborhood. It is difficult to root for the biggest, baddest, most well-connected kid on the block,” he added.
The shift in public opinion follows reports concerning foreign influence on American policy. Recent polling indicates 51% of likely Republicans and 74% of Democrats believe Israel exerts too much influence over U.S. foreign policy decisions.
Confidence in Israeli leadership also remains low among younger voters, as 58% of Republicans under 50 express little to no confidence in Netanyahu. In contrast, 66% of Republicans aged 50 and over still maintain trust in the foreign leader.
