WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • According to the Associated Press report, a subpoena was been given to Hunter Biden that sought to get more information aside from his business dealings in Burisma.
  • The Justice Department was looking for potential unlawful monetary crimes committed by the incoming presidential son.
  • Biden’s lawyer has denied issuing a comment on the investigation.

According to a report released on Sunday, Hunter Biden received a subpoena that aimed at obtaining information about his transactions with Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company where he formerly served as a board member. The written order also sought to get information on his China dealings and other entities related to his working transactions.

The Justice Department is doing a tax inquiry during his tenure with Burisma, the incoming presidential son said last week. He also said that the investigation started two years ago, but only came to know it recently.

Based on a person familiar with the case, the Associated Press reported that the suit sought to scrutinze Biden’s global transactions beyond his Burisma’s dealings.

The report, however, did not clarify whether Biden’s Burisma stint would be the focal point of the investigation or the Justice Department was just seeking his earnings.

Authorities were also investigating if Biden had committed money laundering.

President Donald Trump has criticized Attorney General Bill Barr since he did not publicize the case before Election Day.

“Joe Biden lied on the debate stage he said there’s nothing happening, nothing happening, and Bill Barr should have stepped up… All he had to do is say an investigation is going on,” he said during his Fox & Friends interview which aired on Sunday.

As the Justice Department investigates the case, Pittsburgh’s US attorney office is also collecting information from Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and others.

Last October, the Post published a story, claiming that Hunter sought his father’s presence before a Burisma VIP. The piece also said that the younger Biden earned big profits in connection with a Chinese energy company.

Hunter became a Burisma board member in 2014, with a monthly salary of $50,000, based on reports. He left the company in April 2019 following the end of his term.

Hunter’s lawyer has declined the AP’s request for comment. Amid the ongoing investigation, the President-elect said that he is proud of his son.
