Ukraine’s energy and infrastructure came under heavy fire as Russian forces launched a coordinated assault, resulting in significant outages and forcing nuclear power plants to decrease production.
The International Atomic Energy Agency stated that “widespread military activities overnight” led Ukrainian nuclear plants to reduce output for safety.
Russia reportedly sent 653 drones and 51 missiles toward Ukraine, with Ukrainian forces intercepting the majority of these threats.
Power and heating stations in the Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions were directly hit, intensifying hardship as winter progresses.
The Ukrainian ministry for development of communities and territories shared that thousands in southern Odesa lost access to heat and clean water, while port infrastructure sustained attack damage, prompting operators to rely on generators.
“Port facilities (in Odesa) have also been attacked: part of the infrastructure has been de-energised, and operators have switched to backup power from generators,” the ministry reported.
The energy ministry assured citizens that “emergency repair work is already underway where safety conditions permit. Energy companies are doing everything possible to restore power to all customers as quickly as possible.”
A railway hub near Kyiv, specifically in the town of Fastiv, experienced damage to both the depot and railway carriages, causing the cancellation of some suburban trains. No casualties were reported.
“Russia continues to disregard any peace efforts and instead strikes critical civilian infrastructure, including our energy system and railways,” said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The Russian Defence Ministry acknowledged responsibility for the attacks, claiming their use of high-precision, long-range weaponry targeted military-industrial sites, energy facilities supporting defense, and port infrastructure serving military operations.
In Poland, sirens in Lubartow were activated as a precaution due to nearby military actions, and Polish jets scrambled, though no airspace was violated.
