Protester Falls for Viral Hormuz Wordplay at Rally

Clear Facts
- A demonstrator at a Manhattan rally fell for a comedian’s satirical question about the fictional “gays of Hormuz.”
- The interviewee agreed the U.S. was being homophobic by ignoring the fake group while discussing the actual Strait of Hormuz.
- Prominent conservative figures reacted to the viral clip with disbelief over the lack of basic geographic and geopolitical knowledge displayed.
A protester at a New York City rally fell victim to a simple wordplay trap set by comedian Lionel Leede. The comedian questioned the woman on why the nation focuses on the “straits” of Hormuz rather than the “gays” of Hormuz.
The protester, wearing a button that read “deport the racists,” immediately agreed with the comedian’s assessment. She claimed that gay individuals have historically been discriminated against on many levels, including in war zones.
Leede continued the satire by suggesting that the vital waterway could be turned into an island destination. The demonstrator enthusiastically supported the idea, failing to recognize the comedian was joking about a strategic global shipping lane.
“Historically like you know gays have always been very discriminated against which is wrong on so many levels,” she said.
“I just feel like if we’re going to go in there we can’t leave the gay people behind. I don’t think we should go in there at all but if we’re going to the gays of Hormuz we could turn it into Fire Island,” Leede said.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passage in the Persian Gulf that facilitates the transport of one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Recent disruptions in the lane by Iran have led to significant surges in global energy prices.
The clip drew sharp criticism from conservative leaders who expressed concern over the state of political discourse. Senator Ted Cruz shared the video on social media with a warning that such displays of ignorance are a troubling sign for the future.
