Romney likens Trump’s false election claims to WWE: “Entertaining but, not real”

Utah Senator Mitt Romney (R) likened the false claims of former President Trump about the 2020 election being rigged against him to WWE’s sports entertainment industry.
Romney made the remarks during an appearance on Sunday at CNN‘s “State of the Union.” Host Jake Tapper asked the senator about the repeated claims by Trump and other Republicans, and its potential impact on democracy.
Romney remarked, “Here in the U.S., there’s a growing recognition that this is a bit like WWF, that it’s entertaining, but it’s not real.”
The senator was referring to WWF (World Wrestling Federation), now known as WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment).
Romney continued, “And I know people want to say yeah, they believe in the big lie in some cases, but I think people recognize that it’s a lot of show and bombast, but it’s going nowhere. The election is over. It was fair.”
On Saturday evening, Trump held his first post-presidential rally in Wellington, Ohio. There, he repeatedly stated false claims that the latest presidential election was rigged, referring to it as “the big lie.”
Romney expressed his worries that the false claims made by Trump and several Republican lawmakers might send a negative signal to the world.
“I can tell you that it is surely being used around the world to minimize the support for democracy,” he stated. “I mean there’s a battle going on in the world right now between the autocratic nations like China and Russia, and nations that believe in democracy.”
He continued, “If the autocratic nations can point to the United States, which is the birthplace really of this modern democracy, and can say ‘They can’t even run an election there that’s not fraudulent, how can you possibly run it in your country?’ that obviously is having an impact on the cause of democracy and freedom around the world.”
