WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Sen. Mitt Romney believes the upcoming Trump impeachment will be good for the country, challenging the Republican’s argument the trial will only lead to division.
  • Former President Trump was the first-ever top executive in the history of the U.S to be impeached twice.
  • Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has earlier said that Trump initiated the Capitol attack on Jan.6, which took the lives of at least five people.

On Sunday, Sen. Mitt Romney said former President Donald Trump’s forthcoming impeachment trial is an important procedure for   “accountability” and “unity,” contradicting other Republicans who debate the proceedings will only create further division amongst Americans.

During a guesting to“Fox News Sunday,” Romney said that

“If we are going to have unity in our country, I think it’s important to recognize the need for accountability, for truth and justice,”

adding that he looks forward to a quicker movement of the trial.

The senator further noted that there’s an attempt to corrupt America’s election system, and it did not come from President Joe Biden but former President Trump.

Romney did not confirm, though, if he will vote for the conviction of Trump.  It was recalled that he was the lone GOP that moved against the former president during his first impeachment in 2020.

On Jan.13, the House voted to impeach Trump, making him the first president in the U.S to be impeached twice.  At least 10 of his party mates in the Congress got united their Democratic contemporaries in saying yes to submit the resolution.

On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced that the lower chamber would pass the article of impeachment to the Senate the following Monday. The impeachment proceeding is set to start by Feb. 9.

Some Republicans have argued that the impeachment will go against President Joe Biden’s call for unity in the U.S amidst many problems afflicting the nation such as the coronavirus pandemic. Other GOP members believed the procedure itself is unlawful since Trump is done with his term.

Romney told CNN on Sunday though it was obvious that proceeding with the trial is constitutional, agreeing with other Democratic leaders who wanted to push through with impeachment.

On a press briefing at the Capitol the previous week, Pelosi explained going after Trump will not push away her followers, saying

“The fact is, the president of the United States committed an act of incitement of insurrection,”

adding that ignoring and moving on from the issue is not a unifying act.

Discreetly,  Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was reportedly pleased with the impeachment vote by the House against Trump.

McConnel has said earlier that he sees Trump as the one who triggered the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol, which led to the death of no less than 5 people.

Meanwhile, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., told “Fox News Sunday” that for him, the proceeding is senseless, saying that

“The first chance I get to vote to end this trial, I’ll do it because I think it is really bad for America.“
