WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Responding to media reports of his infamous Cancun trip amid Texas’ winter storms, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX.) said that people should not be assholes and treat each other respectively.
  • Cruz defended Texas’ energy independence amid the power outages which struck the state.
  • The GOP senator also slammed people who leaked photos of their family dog and his wife on the Cancun beach.

In the aftermath of his Cancun trip controversy as Texas struggled with snowstorms, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX.) had some advice for the people involved in leaking his trip: “do not be assholes” and treat everyone with respect.

Cruz shared his thoughts on the issue ━ of going to Cancun with his family and the text message leakage of his wife to the press ━  as he was interviewed on Ruthless podcast about “next-generation conservative talk.”

The cold weather killed at least 30 Texans as millions of state residents endured power outages and water shortages. Texas is also met with outrageous electric bills as power companies pursue gaining profit.

Cruz denounced such corporate conduct, yet he defended Texas’ energy independence. He said that it was nice that “the feds don’t get to regulate us so well,” noting that it maintained low energy prices.

Cruz noted that the state “produces a lot more wind than California does,” while insisting that “the wind turbines froze, that was a big problem, the snow and ice on the solar panels dramatically reduced the ability of solar panels to generate electricity.”

Per experts, the Texas blackouts have little to do with renewable energy resources.

“There were also problems with both coal and natural gas production, and so those drops significantly as well and it was kind of a perfect storm of all of those together,” Cruz admitted.

Then he went on to express his disappointment to people behind the press reports, for how they covered his family’s trip to Cancun. He argued then that he wanted to be a “good dad” before eventually confessing that his departure was a “total mistake.”

Addressing the people who leaked his wife Heidi’s messages about their trip, Cruz said: “Here’s a suggestion: Just don’t be assholes. Just, you know, treat each other as human beings, have to some degree some modicum of respect.”

The GOP lawmaker said that Heidi was “pretty pissed” with the incident.

Cruz also condemned the press report about his dog, Snowflake, who was captured in the photo being “home alone” in their Houston residence. He argued that Snowflake had been “home with a dog sitter and actually the heat and power was back on”.

He also slammed posted photos of Heidi at the Mexican beach.

“The New York Post ran all these pictures of Heidi and her bikini,” he said. “I will tell you that she is pissed.”

Cruz faced public criticisms for leaving Texas last week as the winter storms devastated the entire state and the majority of the US.
