  • President Trump expanded the travel ban to include five new countries following a wave of terror attacks overseas.
  • Travelers from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, Syria, and those with Palestinian Authority documents are now banned from entry.
  • The White House cited national security and vigilance in the visa process as reasons for the expansion.

President Donald Trump has broadened the existing travel ban, adding Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria to the list of restricted countries.

Entry is also barred for travelers with Palestinian Authority documents as part of the updated security measures.

“The United States must exercise extreme vigilance during the visa-issuance and immigration processes to identify, prior to their admission or entry into the United States, foreign nationals who intend to harm Americans or our national interests,” the president’s proclamation states.

“The United States Government must ensure that admitted aliens do not intend to threaten its citizens; undermine or destabilize its culture, government, institutions, or founding principles; or advocate for, aid, or support designated foreign terrorists or other threats to our national security,” it adds.

The decision came days after deadly terror attacks, with one of the most recent incidents in Sydney, Australia, where ISIS-inspired individuals targeted Jewish community members during Hanukkah celebrations.

This attack left 15 victims dead and highlighted the need for increased vigilance on immigration, according to administration officials.

On Saturday, two U.S. Army soldiers and an American civilian interpreter were killed by ISIS in Syria, further intensifying security concerns.

Last month, a National Guardsman died and another was injured after an Afghan national, admitted under a recent federal program, allegedly opened fire in Washington, D.C.

Specialist Sarah Beckstrom lost her life after the attack, while Andrew Wolfe is continuing to recover from his injuries.

President Trump’s expanded travel ban aims to protect American citizens and uphold national interests in a time of heightened global threats.
