  • President Trump announced he plans to issue a “full and complete pardon” to former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández.
  • Trump reaffirmed his endorsement of Nasry “Tito” Asfura just days ahead of Honduras’ elections.
  • Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in U.S. prison for conspiring with drug traffickers following a 2024 conviction.

Former President Trump declared Friday that he would grant a pardon to ex-Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández. This statement comes ahead of Honduras’ presidential election, as Trump also focuses on regional political influence.

Trump posted on Truth Social that Hernández had been “treated very harshly and unfairly” regarding his conviction and sentencing in New York.

“I will be granting a Full and Complete Pardon to Former President Juan Orlando Hernandez who has been, according to many people that I greatly respect, treated very harshly and unfairly,” Trump said.

“This cannot be allowed to happen, especially now, after Tito Asfura wins the Election, when Honduras will be on its way to Great Political and Financial Success.”

Hernández was convicted in March 2024 for conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S. and two related weapons offenses. The conviction followed a two-week trial.

Trump doubled down on his support for Tito Asfura, describing the candidate as a leader Washington can trust. Trump maintains the U.S. would offer strong backing if Asfura wins.

According to Trump, “the U.S. would be ‘very supportive’ if he wins because Washington has ‘so much confidence in him, his policies and what he will do for the great people of Honduras.'”

In an additional Truth Social post, Trump stated he and Asfura could “work together to fight the narcocommunists and bring needed aid to the people of Honduras.”

Trump took aim at Asfura’s rivals, particularly Rixi Moncada and Salvador Nasralla. He accused Moncada of idolizing Fidel Castro and questioned Nasralla’s commitment to liberty.

“His chief opponent is Rixi Moncada, who says Fidel Castro is her idol,” Trump said.

“Nasralla is no friend of Freedom. A borderline Communist, he helped Xiomara Castro by running as her Vice President. He won, and helped Castro win. Then he resigned, and is now pretending to be an anti-Communist only for the purposes of splitting Asfura’s vote. The people of Honduras must not be tricked again.”

Polls show the race is close among Asfura, Moncada, and Nasralla. Voters in Honduras will elect their president on Sunday, with the winner set to serve from 2026 to 2030.

Since 2022, Honduras has been led by President Xiomara Castro, the country’s first female president.
