WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • President Donald Trump has planned to create his own political party which would be called ‘The Patriot Party.’
  • The former president was apparently frustrated with his GOP colleagues’ actions in the recent turn of events.
  • Should Trump pushes through, it would yield impact on both the Republican and Democratic parties.

According to the Wall Street Journal, former President Donald Trump was planning to establish his own political party following his departure from the White House.

It was not yet clear how committed Trump was in wanting to build his own party but he already suggested a name which would be ‘The Patriot Party,’ the outlet reported.

The plan came as the former president expressed his dismay with fellow GOP leaders over time. He felt that he was left out by his colleagues in the legislature when they proceeded with certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

A longtime ally and supporter, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY.) even called out Trump for inciting the siege.

“They were provoked by the president and other powerful people and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like,” McConnell said on Tuesday.

While GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CAL.) backed fellow Republicans’ plot to challenge the election results, Trump was reportedly outraged by the legislator’s remark that “the president bears responsibility” for the violence and for suggesting to pass a censure resolution given the incident.

Moreover, Trump was appalled at 10 GOP House members who voted in favor of his impeachment.

Trump’s move would become a huge blow for the Republicans since it could yield division within the GOP but it could also backfire in terms of voter split which could be an advantage for Democratic candidates.
