  • President Donald Trump wore a face mask for the first time on July 11 at Walter Reed military hospital after months of refusing to wear one.
  • He has since called wearing a face mask a “Patriotic” act and declared, “There is nobody more Patriotic than me.”
  • He is not considering a national mandate on wearing masks, however, and said people should have the freedom to choose.

After refusing to wear a mask in public throughout the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump has since changed his tune and showed up wearing a face mask while visiting the Walter Reed military hospital last July 11.

On Monday, he called wearing a face mask a “Patriotic” act. He also shared a photo of himself wearing a face mask with the caption: “There is nobody more Patriotic than me.”

Trump tweeted: “We are United in our effort to defeat the Invisible China Virus, and many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can’t socially distance. There is nobody more Patriotic than me, your favorite President!”

During a Fox News Sunday interview, host Chris Wallace asked the president if he regretted not wearing a mask from the start of the pandemic and if he is considering a national mandate.

Trump responded, “I want people to have a certain freedom, and I don’t believe in that.”

He also countered the Centers for Disease Control’s guidelines that said “if everybody wore a mask for 4-6 weeks, we could get this under control.”

Trump remarked, “I don’t agree with the statement that if everybody wear a mask everything disappears. Hey, Dr. Fauci said don’t wear a mask. Our surgeon general – terrific guy – said don’t wear a mask.”

More than 3.8 million coronavirus cases with nearly 141,000 deaths have been recorded in the U.S. as of Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The president had continually argued that the recent increase in cases was brought about by an increase in testing.
