WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) should give her more “power” to please Republican voters.
  • Greene lost her committee roles in Feb. 2021, just a month after she took office.
  • If Republicans take back control of the House, McCarthy could become the next House Speaker.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) warned that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) should give her more “power” and “leeway” to please GOP voters in the event that the party takes back control of the House after the midterms.

If Republicans take back control of the House, McCarthy could be the next Speaker of the House.

Speaking with The New York Times Magazine, Greene said, “I think that to be the best Speaker of the House and to please the base, he’s going to give me a lot of power and a lot of leeway. And if he doesn’t, they’re going to be very unhappy about it. I think that’s the best way to read that.”

The congresswoman clarified that it’s “not in any way a threat” and is just the “reality.”

Greene also advised McCarthy to take a more “aggressive” approach against President Biden. In January 2021, she drafted impeachment articles against Biden immediately after he was sworn into office.

Greene lost her committee roles in February 2021, just a month after she took office.

Democrats and 11 Republicans voted to remove her from the Education, Budget and Labor committees after social media posts made prior to her election resurfaced. In some of the posts, Greene agreed that the 2018 Parkland shooting was a “false flag” operation and also questioned if a plane really hit the Pentagon on 9/11.

The congresswoman also aligned herself with conspiracy group QAnon and liked a Facebook comment that called for the assassination of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). She also shared a photo of herself holding a gun to photos of Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.)

McCarthy said in November 2021 that Greene and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) should have their committee roles restored. Democrats and two Republicans scolded Gosar last year after he shared a video depicting himself as an anime character assassinating Ocasio-Cortez and attacking Biden.

McCarthy said at the time that the two rebuked representatives should have committee roles, either the same role as they had or better assignments. He continued, “Taylor Greene, she was just a freshman … She has a right to serve on committees.”

Greene told The New York Times Magazine that she believes she’ll “be good” on the Oversight and Judiciary committees. She added, “I completely deserve it. I’ve been treated like s—. I have been treated like garbage.”

Greene’s statements have been repeatedly criticized, and her posts about the pandemic and the vaccines have been frequently censored on Twitter.

Still, Greene expects easy reelection next month in her heavily Republican district.
