WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • GOP Rep. Dan Crenshaw (TX.) and Illinois Senate candidate Bobby Piton engaged in a verbal brawl on Wednesday during an Illinois fundraiser event.
  • Piton asserted that former President Donald Trump had won the 2020 presidential elections.
  • Crenshaw stressed that there could be election fraud but it cannot overturn the fact that President Joe Biden is the winner.

During a fundraiser for the Illinois Republican Party in Rosemont Wednesday night, a confrontation happened between Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX.) and Illinois Senate candidate Bobby Piton. The incident revealed the divide between the party on whether or not former President Donald Trump was cheated in the 2020 Presidential elections.

In their encounter, Piton challenged Crenshaw that Trump had really won against President Joe Biden.

Crenshaw told Piton, “Don’t kid yourself into believing [fraud] is why we lost, it’s not,” to which Piton responded with “You’re wrong.”

As he cited a malicious and partisan vote count in Arizona’s Maricopa County, Piton stressed that he has “plenty of proof.”

“It’s going to turn out and it’s going to flip. You watch,” he told Crenshaw.

“I’m not going to argue with this. This is something you got to accept. Is there a lot of voter fraud? Yeah, there probably is. But enough that Trump won? No, absolutely not. Five different states. Hundreds of thousands of votes. You’re kidding yourself,” Crenshaw fired back.

Even with no substantial proof, polls showed that the majority of Republicans believe Trump’s claims of massive voter fraud. Earlier this month, a Yahoo News/YouGov survey revealed that 66 percent of GOP officials believed that “the election was rigged and stolen from Trump.” Only about 18 percent think that “Joe Biden won fair and square.”

The Maricopa County vote count, which was referred by Piton as one case of election fraud, has caused friction among Arizona Republicans for months.

According to Jack Sellers, the GOP chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the unofficial “audit” cannot in any way flip over the election results. He even described it as an “adventure in never-never land.”

“If you haven’t figured out that the election in Maricopa County was free, fair and accurate yet, I’m not sure you ever will… There was no fraud, there wasn’t an injection of ballots from Asia nor was there a satellite that beamed votes in our election equipment,” he recently wrote in a letter.

A critic of Republican legislators who believed that the 2020 election was “rigged,” Crenshaw did not vote to overturn the election results during the January 6 US Capitol riot. The congressman, though, supported a Texas lawsuit that aimed at nullifying the election results in a petition to the Supreme Court. He also did not vote to impeach Trump for his involvement in the chaotic January 6 event.
