WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the Virginia governor’s race.
  • The upset delivers a warning sign for Democrats heading into next year’s midterm elections.
  • Youngkin’s victory serves as a reflection of significant discontent with President Joe Biden.

Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in Virginia’s election for governor Tuesday night. This is a major win for the Republican Party after succeeding political losses in Virginia. The upset is also a reflection of significant discontent with President Joe Biden and his administration.

Youngkin’s victory is also seen as momentum for the GOP nationwide ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

First-time candidate Youngkin is a millionaire businessman while McAuliffe is a former Virginia governor who served one term.

Biden won by 10 points in Virginia just a year ago. Incumbent Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam won by 9 points four years ago. Youngkin was able to get the support of some moderate Republicans and independents by keeping his distance from former President Donald Trump. But he did that without alienating pro-Trump Republicans

Youngkin’s win has huge implications on the national level. The GOP appears to be on track to regain control of the House of Representatives next year, and possibly the Senate. The clock is now ticking for Democrats on Capitol Hill.

There were also other forces at play, including Biden’s falling approval rating. The country faces ongoing economic problems such as inflation, labor shortages, supply chain disruptions and high gas prices. The pandemic is also still ongoing.

Youngkin has the ability to retain the votes of Trump supporters while winning back Republicans in Virginia who do not like Trump.

McAuliffe attempted to associate Youngkin with Trump every opportunity, but Youngkin came off as more of a country club conservative in the mold of Sen. Mitt Romney, according to Yahoo! News.

In the end, the GOP overlooks their differences in pursuit of victory.

Youngkin’s victory in blue Virginia will likely offer a playbook for Republicans in battleground districts across the country next year. And McAuliffe’s defeat is a signal to Democrats that, with Trump off the ballot, they’ll need to find new ways to compete in an increasingly difficult political environment.

If you like Trump or not how could anyone with any sense vote for someone like Biden and Harris, if you looked to see what they stand for. Biden has been screwing things up as a senator and vice president for forty years plus. You knew he would just be another Obama, Clinton and Soros yes man while selling us out to our biggest enemies. History and people tell us what good things presidents did, but if you read between the lines you see they all had flaws, some more than others. Some wanted to share things with our so called allies who were never that, they just needed help with Hitler, but they were as bad, but no one said so. Trump was the most American than any and yet gets bad mouthed more, I did not like some things he said but what he tried to do with little help was great for America, I think. You can like this administration if you want but I never will. I guess that is why we serve so everyone can say, do what they want but I just can not understand them. Those people in charge of our military has messed everything up, the only thing that will save us are all the homes with weapons and know how to use them. God help us. the old marine
