WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Akron police released a video Sunday of the pursuit and fatal shooting of Jayland Walker.
  • Walker was unarmed when the police chased him on foot.
  • Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett acknowledged officers could have fired more than 90 shots, with Walker suffering at least 60 bullet wounds.

In a video released Monday, eight Ohio cops can be seen firing a barrage of bullets that killed Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old black man fleeing a traffic stop in Akron. The fatal shooting took place last Monday.

Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett on Sunday acknowledged the officers could have fired more than 90 shots, with Walker suffering at least 60 bullet wounds, according to cincinnati.com.

Walker, a DoorDash driver, allegedly refused to stop for police trying to pull him over for unspecified traffic and vehicle violations.

Police, who chased Walker, said he fired a gunshot from his vehicle as he was being pursued.

Footage reveals Walker got out of the vehicle after stopping his car, wearing a ski mask, and ran away from the police.

Police said they believed Walker was preparing to shoot at them when they opened fire. Footage shows a hail of bullets fired toward the young man. Mylett confirmed Walker was unarmed when officers fired at him.

A lawyer for Walker’s family has said cops continued to fire at Walker as the man was on the ground.

According to the Beacon Journal, a local medical examiner who arrived at the scene found Walker in handcuffs lying on his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mylett added that police later discovered a bullet casing, consistent with the gun Walker had, around the area where cops believe he shot his gun while being pursued.

The Cincinnati news outlet reported that another gun was found on the driver’s seat of Walker’s car. There’s also a loaded magazine and what seemed to be a gold wedding band. Walker’s fiancee reportedly died in an accident in June.

According to Mylett, Walker had more than 60 gunshot wounds, but officials are still examining entrance and exit wounds. Police added that officers tried earlier to use their stun guns to stop Walker but failed.

Bobby DiCello, a lawyer for the Walker family, said Sunday after the body cam footage was released that he was “very concerned” police claimed Walker fired at officers. He added that there was no justification for this death.

“They want to turn him into a masked monster with a gun,” DiCello said. “I ask you, as he’s running away, what is reasonable? To gun him down? No, that’s not reasonable.”

All of the Akron officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave.

You know, when are these blacks going to learn. When you are directed to stop by a police officer, YOU STOP, you don’t fire a gun and take off. When you threaten a police officer’s life you need to expect the worst. The blacks need to respect the laws of the land just like everybody else. You are not special. You want to make things worse for yourselves just keep acting like you are now.

You say “blacks” as if it is only one group, but to be correct it is realistically anyone who is stopped by police need to realize they are under temporary detainment lawfully until otherwise released or arrested. Police have that authority when an infraction or crime is observed and can detain you for it. Saying ‘blacks’ is stupid and uncalled for.

It is regrettable, and it is more so since a lawyer was retained by the family that defines what is reasonable for us all. Perhaps this lawyer will also tell us all the precise meaning of truth. Maybe he can also tell us what transpired more accurately than those at the incident. Granted, the lawyer is doing his job as requested by those who retained him, but his job is litigation, not justice. He will seek financial compensation for a loss that cannot be assessed in dollars. He will tarnish the lives and careers of other men, the police, to accomplish moral retribution and revenge for what may be a “suicide-by-cop”.

Michael, if you read the rules of the law, in point once the threat of is passed, this guy running away . At that point if I as a public citizen did this would be up on charges of murder even if only one bullet fired and hit person victim. Anyone who believes possible 90 bullets fired or at least 60 which struck victim isn’t excessive should question this.

first it is said he was unarmed, then it was stated there was a gun found on the seat of the car next to the driver. Also a full magazine too. So which was it.? It cannot be both ways. I would say ninety shots with at least fifty in the body is overkill. No telling how that is explained.

Ya better watch the video again, as you obvioulsy can’t recall facts. I hope you’re never on a jury. He fired 21 shots from his moving vehicle, then got out of the vehicle and ran, leaving his gun on the front seat. He porbably tossed the empty magazine out the window during the chase.

Michael O’connor is absolutely correct. I was pulled over on my motorcycle 2 weeks ago and put in handcuffs. An incident had evidently happened in the area I was in and the police were looking for a person on a motorcycle. They told me I fit the description. They directed me to put down my kickstand, get off the bike and put my hands behind my back. I didn’t know what was going on but did what they said. I was cooperative and they appreciated that. After about 5 minutes of checking out video cameras they apologized and let me go. I didn’t run or shoot at them and I didn’t end up looking like Swiss cheese. If only these blacks would cooperate instead of acting like animals, running from the cops and shooting, they would live a much longer life. Most of these incidents are preventable with a little cooperation.

Any one thought it may have been planned? Shoots gun inside car, runs from cops in dark, turns at cops, gets shot. He was found with a wedding ring in his pocket and his fiance died in June. Anyone check to see if he was depressed? Could this be a case of “Suicide by Cop”? Hate to “Monday morning Quarterback” but seems like way too many shots fired

It sounds like a little over 50percent hits in body mass. If the cops had better aim they wouldn’t have had to fire so many shots.

This will all come out in the lawsuit against the police. However, their high-priced, “woke” lawyer will try his damnist to twist everything so the city will have to pay this norons family. And “too many shots fired”?? Ya ever seen Bonnie and Clyde’s car????

There seems to be a problem with following simple rules, you pull over when the police flash the blue lights.
Maybe as a public service announcement we can educate the public again with a video showing what you should and shouldn’t do when you’re asked to pull over.
