Biden says ‘Enough!’ on gun violence, calls for ban on assault weapons [Video]

  • President Biden called for bans on assault weapons, or at least instituting tighter gun laws.
  • Biden listed several shootings that have shaken the nation, and said that the country shouldn’t be accustomed to such violence.
  • The president clarified that calling for gun control doesn’t mean taking away guns from lawful gun owners.

President Joe Biden addressed the nation after another shooting happened in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He again called for stricter gun control measures, such as reimposing the ban on assault weapons.

Biden declared, “We need to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. And if we can’t ban assault weapons, then we should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21. Strengthen background checks and safe storage laws and red flag laws. Repeal the immunity that protects gun manufacturers from liability. Address the mental health crisis.”

The president’s remarks were similar to his statements after a racist massacre killed 10 in Buffalo, New York, and another teenager killed 19 kids and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas.

He noted that there have been at least 20 more mass shootings since Uvalde. This year alone, there have been over 18,000 thousand gun-related deaths in the country — a rate that far exceeds that of other developed nations.

The president asked again, “How much more carnage are we willing to accept?”

Biden listed some of the worst mass shootings in recent American history: ColumbineSandy HookCharlestonOrlandoLas Vegas. He then pointed out that none of these spurred Congress to action, but it has to be different this time.

Biden clarified that he is not anti-gun, stating, “I respect the culture and the tradition and the concerns of lawful gun owners.”

He then argued, “At the same time, the Second Amendment, like all other rights, is not absolute,” saying that there are still bans placed on certain weapons.

Biden was a senator from Delaware when he helped craft the 1994 assault weapons ban, which was shown to decrease the incidence of gun violence across the nation. But the ban expired during the George W. Bush administration in 2004. After the killing of 20 children and six adults in Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, then-president Barack Obama vowed action. But a modest bipartisan plan to expand background checks failed in the Senate.

Democrats have hesitated to expand gun control measures since then, until the recent string of attacks in Buffalo, Uvalde, and Tulsa.

But a bitterly divided Senate is still struggling to reach a consensus on measures that are far more lenient than what Biden had proposed. Republican-led states are even rushing to loosen remaining constraints on gun ownership.

Biden alluded that the public widely supports his prescribed measures, and warned that inaction this time around could lead to backlash at the November elections.

Biden declared, “If Congress fails, I believe this time a majority of American people won’t give up either. I believe the majority of you will act and turn your outrage into making this issue central to your vote.”

“Enough!” he repeated at one point. “Enough!”

Guess next we are going to ban bow and arrows, machetes, knives, baseball bats, golf clubs, these are all possible weapons. It just depends on the mental stability of the person who is holding them. As far as taking the immunity away from the manufacturer for making the weapons no one at the manufature pulled the trigger to make that gun fire. Al it takes is person that has a mental disorder to pull the trigger. If the weapon is laid on the ground it will kill nothing or no one because it cannot pull its own trigger. It is an inanimate object and cannot be fired someone gS to pull the trigger

YES! Laura, agreed with YOU! Read that after the very FIRST Chinese Embassador visited Englabd, during his “Welcomce Home Dinner” he said: “The Barbarians truly love their wars, to the point that they even eat with weapoms in their hands! Kneives, forks and shavels…”

Never a word on the Shooter is the cause of the problem, it’s always the gun! The evil gun.
Where guns are banned, we see lots of killing using a knife or ax, and in the middle east, they like bombs.

First there is no such thing as fun violence, let’s not get sucked up in to that metallity. There are evil, wicked and mentally ill individuals that use fire arms and a tool to carry out there evil deeds. Secondly, if we are going to make fire arm manufactors liable then we had better make car manufactors, alcohol manufactors and liquor stores liable when a drunk driver causes multiple fatalities in an auto wreck or the deaths of many children from a school bus wreck. Let’s put the blame on the individual not the tool used to carry out the disastrous deed.

Criminals will always be able to get weapons and now the dunce oc rat liberals want to leave us unprotected. They keep importing criminals across the border, but I guess that’s OK with them.Maybe if the liberals would let parents discipline there offspring from day one we just might not have these shootings. Why don’t you people go after the real problem,it’s not law abiding citizens and it is not the N.R.A.

For some reason, I just don’t understand the term “gun violence”
Maybe if the term ‘violent people with guns” was used, it would make sense to me.
However that does fit the mold for”let’s take away the guns of honest people”
Anyone with a brain knows laws won’t stop criminals!

perhaps what is needed is “common sense laws” against murder and mayhem. oh wait, these laws are already on the books! who could have predicted they would have no effect? when the pigs in washington give up their security details, i will be willing to part with my beloved submachine gun and bazooka.

These shootings are orchestrated by the left to foment hysteria. Politicians are exploiting the lack of Constitutional understanding. This is why people must be informed voters. Read and understand the Constitution. Be cognizant of what you are voting for.. What we are seeing is the truth spoken of, yet dismissed as conspiracy theories.
