Christian Colleges Face Scrutiny Over Abortion Ties

Clear Facts
A determined pro-life student in California founded a pro-life club at her Christian college, undeterred by the administration’s rejection of her initial proposal.
A new report by Students for Life of America’s Demetree Institute for Pro-Life Advancement (IPA) found a sharp increase in abortion support at Christian colleges after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
- One in seven Christian colleges in the United States is connected to the abortion industry, according to report findings from the 2024-2025 academic year.
- Infractions include referrals to Planned Parenthood and partnerships with abortion industry organizations, with over 26% involving the labeling of Planned Parenthood as a health resource.
- The report ranked colleges from A+ to F based on their abortion industry ties, with failing grades given to schools with four or more infractions.
The study identified 725 Christian colleges as institutions affiliated with Christ-centered denominations and reviewed their websites for abortion references during the 2024-2025 academic year.
Immediately after the Roe decision, campus support for abortion increased by nearly 20%, and since 2024 that figure has reached 38%.
Some colleges post abortion resources online, including Planned Parenthood access, while others offer volunteer and internship opportunities with abortion providers.
To earn an A+ grade, schools must not support abortion in any manner and actively promote pro-life centers.
Schools that neither support abortion nor promote pro-life alternatives are graded A.
Kristan Hawkins, Students for Life Action president, stated the following in an interview:
“You can’t be Christian and be pro-abortion.”
She added:
“It’s not something you can … be flexible on. If you are a Christian, you profess to serve a God who spoke the universe into existence. He sent his only son to die a painful, excruciating death, to rise again in three days so we can live in heaven for all eternity. He did that because we, as His creation, are infinitely invaluable.”
American University in Washington, D.C. topped the report’s list with 34 infractions, driven by programs such as “Youth Empowerment and Reproductive Health” and a webpage listing abortion resources.
The university’s Antiracism Center hosts a “Reproductive Justice” page critical of states restricting abortion after Roe was overturned, citing impacts on disadvantaged groups.
The Antiracism Center page says:
“This has disproportionately impacted poor people, pregnant people of color, and Indigenous pregnant people; groups whose access to privacy and bodily autonomy in the reproductive sphere was already limited. By bringing together the work of feminists of color with allies in the fields of reproductive law, health, and politics, ARPC works to lift up the experiences and actions of women of color and forge new pathways toward a culture and politics of reproductive freedom for all.”
While American University claims not to be currently affiliated with Christianity, its website confirms continued affiliation with the Methodist Church.
Duke University in North Carolina received a failing grade due to 2024 panel discussions supporting abortion as healthcare and the university’s ongoing recognition of its Methodist foundations.
SMU in Texas was cited for 14 infractions, including a webpage offering Planned Parenthood and other abortion advocacy organizations as resources, while also affirming its United Methodist heritage in its mission statement.
Kristi Hamrick, vice president of media and policy for Students for Life of America, said:
“It’s disingenuous for schools to talk about their faith heritage and values on one part of their”
