South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson experienced a medical emergency on Tuesday night while attending a Ukrainian Independence Day celebration in Washington, D.C.

The 77-year-old congressman, who has served South Carolina’s 2nd District since 2001, collapsed during the event and received immediate medical attention from a doctor who was present.

Wilson’s office released a statement confirming that he had been transported to a local hospital.

“Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms. I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals,” Alan, a close associate, wrote. Wilson’s wife was by his side at the hospital.

Members of South Carolina’s congressional delegation quickly rallied around Wilson, offering their support and prayers.

“Praying for a full and speedy recovery for my friend,” said Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

Rep. Nancy Mace also expressed her support, writing, “Spoke to his family tonight. Prayers up for a speedy recovery – as fast as humanly possible! Go Joe!”

Earlier in the day, Wilson had been active on the House floor, participating in votes and engaging with reporters.

It was reported that he had recently returned from a series of international trips in his capacity as Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia.

Wilson’s sudden illness has left many in Washington and South Carolina hoping for his swift recovery.
