WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Southwest Airlines is dealing with a “network connectivity” issue this week, resulting in flight delays and cancellations for three consecutive days.
  • Passengers have brought their complaints about the airline company’s Twitter.
  • Southwest is currently working to address the problem and regain usual operations.

For the third day in a row, Southwest Airlines passengers dealt with delayed and canceled flights as the company attempted to fix the technical glitch which occurred early this week.

According to tracking service FlightAware, Southwest canceled almost 400 flights and over 1,000 delayed flights as of Wednesday late afternoon (Central time). In total, about 40 percent of the airline’s flight schedule was interrupted.

Given their current plight, passengers sent their complaints to Southwest through Twitter. Customers have also complained about the malfunctioning of the company’s online sweepstakes promotion.

According to a Southwest representative, the airline had worked on something dubbed as a “network-connectivity” issue. The mishap manifested on Tuesday, and its impact still yields flight delays and cancelations despite being fixed. The company is still working to get back to its normal operations.

On Monday, Southwest had to delay over 1,500 flights following a weather data mishap supplied by a contractor. The following day, the airline’s flights were shortly halted by the Federal Aviation Administration as the company was forced to cancel over 560 flights and delay more than 1,800 due to the network issue.

Unfortunately, the crisis came as airline companies anticipate a comeback to a business-as-usual season given the summer and as COVID-19 restrictions have been loosened up.

Per aviation research firm Cirium, Southwest was considering to gear up around 87 percent from its July 2019 schedule by next month. The data goes to show that air travel has largely recovered from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This could also be attributed to the fact that millions of Americans had been already fully vaccinated across the US.

On the other hand, American Airlines also experienced some issues as it canceled over 40 flights with more than 350 delayed flights in the past couple of days, as reported by Flightaware.
