Beloved film actress Judi Dench, celebrated for her extensive repertoire spanning six decades, has given indications that her illustrious career might be reaching its curtain call. The cause behind this startling possibility is advanced macular degeneration, a serious health condition that has progressively damaged her vision.
At the recent Chelsea Flower Show in London, a journalist approached Dench with inquiries about any upcoming projects. Her response surprised everyone. She said, “No, no. I can’t even see.” This comment offered a stark glimpse into the extent of her condition and how much it has impacted her ability to work.
Dench has left an indelible mark on audiences through her memorable performances in films such as “Shakespeare In Love,” “Chocolat,” the James Bond franchise, “Philomena,” “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Mrs Brown,” and many more. She was first diagnosed with macular degeneration, a condition that can cause significant loss of central vision, almost ten years ago, in 2012.
In 2023, the esteemed actress confessed, during a television appearance, the difficulties she faced when attempting to read movie scripts.
She said, “It has become impossible, and because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page.” She continued, expressing her frustration, “I used to find it very easy to learn lines and remember them. I could do the whole of ‘Twelfth Night’ right now.”
The first signs of Dench’s deteriorating vision became apparent in 2021. She disclosed that she needed to depend on her friends to read her lines aloud, which she would then memorize. With her most recent statement, it seems that even this coping strategy has become unworkable, signifying a sorrowful twist in her esteemed career.
