  • UK residents may be facing up to 10,000 pounds ($13,000) in fines if they violate quarantine protocols after testing positive for COVID-19.
  • The new rule is set to take effect at the end of the month and will also apply to exposed individuals.
  • The renewed spike in cases has the government considering a second lockdown in addition to the new rule and the “rule of six,” which bars social gatherings larger than six people.

The United Kingdom will be imposing fines up to 10,000 pounds, or $13,000, for individuals who do not self-quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19.

The new rule will take effect at the end of the month, The Associated Press reported.

According to the report, the order will also apply to individuals who were exposed to infected people.

The United Kingdom reported a record number of daily COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Recording over 4,420 cases, it was the highest number of daily cases since May.

Government officials are now considering implementing a second lockdown to battle the current spike in cases and an imminent second wave, The New York Times reported.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared on Friday, “There’s no question, as I’ve said for several weeks now, that we could expect and we are now seeing a second wave coming in.”

“I don’t think anybody wants to go into a second lockdown,” he continued. “But clearly when you look at what is happening, you’ve got to wonder whether we need to go further than the rule of six that we brought in on Monday.”

The “rule of six” refers to the recently implemented measure that bars social gatherings larger than a group of six people. The measure aims to curb the spread of the disease amid a renewed spike in cases.

Protesters clashed with police in London over the weekend during a rally that opposed the measures.
