Biden’s Sanctions on Russia Spark Economic Debate
Clear Facts
- President Joe Biden enacted new sanctions against Russia’s oil industry in the final days of his administration.
- The sanctions are expected to increase gas prices by three to four cents per gallon.
- The sanctions aim to cut off funding for Russia’s war against Ukraine and are projected to cost Russia billions of dollars monthly.
In a move that has sparked significant discussion, President Joe Biden has implemented new sanctions against Russia, targeting its oil industry. This decision comes at the tail end of his administration, raising questions about the timing and its potential impact on American consumers.
During a press conference, a reporter questioned Biden on whether he was concerned about the anticipated rise in gas prices and why he chose to impose these sanctions now, rather than earlier in his term.
Biden responded, stating,
“The sanctions are imposed today because they will have profound effect on the growth of the Russian economy and make it more difficult for Putin to conduct his wars.”
However, he did not directly address the timing of the sanctions.
The sanctions are described as some of the harshest to date and are designed to sever financial support for Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine. They target Russia’s major oil companies and numerous oil-carrying vessels, including those attempting to evade sanctions.
Biden acknowledged the impact on gas prices, claiming they would increase by only three to four cents per gallon. Despite this, the announcement has already led to a sharp rise in oil prices as rumors of the sanctions began to circulate.
The administration projects that these measures will cost Russia “upwards of billions of dollars per month,” aiming to significantly hinder its economic capabilities. This move underscores the administration’s commitment to countering Russian aggression, albeit at a potential cost to American consumers at the pump.

Is the U.S buying Russian oil? If not this action is meaningless. But if so, Why are we funding their industry and war? Lets us our resources efficiently and develop alternate energy sources.
