Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood powerhouse now serving time for his crimes, has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. This type of cancer originates in the bone marrow and can spread into the bloodstream if not treated promptly.
The diagnosis comes as Weinstein, aged 72, is incarcerated in New York, where he is receiving treatment for his condition. This follows his conviction earlier this year in a California court, where he was sentenced to 16 years for rape charges.
Chronic myeloid leukemia is a rare form of cancer, and it has taken scientists considerable time to develop effective treatments. According to the American Cancer Society, while it is slow-growing, it can become acute without timely intervention.
Weinstein’s health has been a subject of concern recently, as he appeared frail during a court appearance in September. He also underwent emergency heart surgery last month, after which his representative assured the public that he was “out of danger at the moment.”
Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s spokesperson, expressed unease about how his client’s health issues have become widely discussed.
“Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will offer no further comment,” Engelmayer stated.
He also refrained from commenting on whether the cancer diagnosis would affect Weinstein’s upcoming trial.
