Pelosi: Biden’s Exit From Race Shielded Democrats From Worse Losses

Clear Facts
- Nancy Pelosi believes Democrats would have faced more significant losses in the 2024 election if Joe Biden had stayed in the race.
- Democrats gained one seat in the House by flipping nine Republican-held seats, while Republicans flipped eight Democratic seats.
- Pelosi has not spoken to Biden since he dropped out, and she emphasized the importance of focusing on America’s children.
In a recent conversation, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed her view that the Democratic Party might have encountered more severe setbacks in the 2024 elections if Joe Biden had continued his presidential campaign.
The Democrats managed to net a single seat in the House of Representatives by flipping nine seats previously held by Republicans, while Republicans took eight seats from the Democrats. Pelosi’s comments suggest skepticism towards Biden’s belief that he could have secured victory had he remained in the race.
Pelosi stated, “Well all I know is that we won a seat in the House. We did not lose any seats. People were like ‘oh the Democrats lost,’ no, we did not. I think it would’ve been quite different with President Biden at the top of the ticket.”
The call for Biden to exit the race gained momentum after his poor performance in the June 27 debate against Donald Trump. Responding to his party’s pressure, Biden announced his withdrawal on July 21, endorsing then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who eventually lost the popular vote and all seven swing states to Trump.
Biden reportedly harbored resentment towards Pelosi, along with Barack Obama and Chuck Schumer, for their roles in urging him to step down. Jill Biden expressed her disappointment in Pelosi for not supporting her husband during this period.
Pelosi confirmed she hasn’t communicated with Biden since his departure from the race. She emphasized the importance of the Democratic victory for the nation’s children, saying, “But the fact is, we’re all on a mission for the American people, for America’s working families. My whole passion about being in politics is for the children. So what is it that we’re doing for the children?”
During an interview, Pelosi refrained from stating whether she backed Biden’s reelection bid, pointing out that his decision to leave was his own. Despite allegations of orchestrating the push for Biden’s exit, Pelosi denied leading the effort, although sources indicated she had warned Biden about his options.
In a later interview, Pelosi hinted that Harris or another candidate might have been a stronger choice if Biden had stepped down earlier, suggesting they could have made a more compelling case to the American public.
